International Fees

President

After the Union's stance on International Fees was passed at the Union Council, I have been having meetings with senior members of College to put across students' views. The Council pushed for greater clarity on how fees are spent, and as to how fees are set and rise for international students.

I met with the Pro Rector (Education), College Secretary, Deputy Rector and Director of Strategic Planning. All were keen on the idea of providing as much information as possible, to allow students to plan financially ahead. I can now confirm that international students' fees are set each year, and are tracked to the September Retail Price Index each year, for the duration of a student's degree. This has been in effect for some years now, but to avoid confusion for students who joined the College before this came in place, it is not as widely publicised as it could be. This is something that the Director of Strategic Planning has promised to look in to for the future.

As RPI sits normally somewhere between 2-3% each year, depending on the starting year's fee, students should be able to roughly work out what they will be expected to pay for the duration of their course.

In regards to the data requests on 'how the fees are spent', the College does not accurately collect this data. On a very 'high level' this would be possible - for instance some percentage of all College expenditure goes on facilities development, another percentage on academic staff salaries, etc. This can be seen in the College's accounts published annually.
