Goodbye... sort of!

Deputy President (Welfare)

This is my final blog post as Deputy President (Welfare).

I've been very proud of what's been achieved this year.

To summarise a few key achievements:

  • The Union held its first ever alcohol-free club night called Dri in October. This was a fantastic opportunity for an event that was inclusive to under-18s, non-drinkers, or people who just like a more relaxed atmosphere. I was very proud of the event and remain very grateful to the Commercial Services team at the Union for making it happen. This is consistent with my manifesto pledge to have inclusive freshers events.

  • Following a conversation with a student around the availability of feminine hygiene products on Campus, I committed the Union to selling feminine hygiene products "at cost" in Shop Extra on the Sherfield Walkway. This is consistent with my manifesto pledge to make Campus a better place for female students.

  • Following my involvement, College's Accommodation Services now have a mechanism for hall room swaps within a hall to occur after two weeks into term. There has been demand for this from students for a considerable time, and I'm proud to have achieved it. I hope this will roll-out further in the future to allowing inter-hall swaps.

  • I have been an active participant on local neighbourhood watch teams. I have at all times raised issues of concern to students and am pleased to report that local police resources have been prioritised accordingly.

  • The College has now committed the spending to having a full-time Mental Health Adviser on Campus.

  • Community & Welfare Board, of which I was Chairman, has funded more student-led campaigns this year than ever before.

  • I'm very proud to have supported the Student Support Fund this year.

I've also met some fantastic people and made some very strong friendships this year.

When I ran for this role in March, I had received more votes than at any point in the previous 5 years of the role's existence. This was both encouraging and nerve-wracking!

I just hope I lived up to those high expectations, and am proud to be able to serve Imperial students for another year as Deputy President (Finance & Services).

I wish my successor, Jennie, the very best for the year.

Floreat collegium imperiali. God Save the Queen.

Chris
