You find me, as I write this, even at 17:00; exhausted, croaking slightly, not quite sure what I’m saying, but still smiling. This is because I have been doing my best to get to as much of Welcome week as I can. I honestly don’t know how all of you Freshers do it, but it’s been great to see all the incredible acts that have been on this week and there’s still so much more to come… which means I can’t curl up in a ball with a hot mug of Lemsip and fend off my Fresher’s flu just yet.
Tonight is the culmination of the week for me, I’ll be darting around three locations in my bright cyan Sabbatical polo shirt to enjoy the entertainment down in h-Bar, Freshers’ Ball at the union and the Medics Roadshow event at the Reynolds Bar in Hammersmith (I haven’t quite figured out the logistics of this social calendar yet). I’ve been bowled over by so many things this week; MingleLite had the Scopes, Lizzie Campbell and the Smokin’ Jays and the Filthy Strings all of whom were excellent and across the road the Techtonics basically stole the night at the Mingle – seriously, a senior manager told me that if they decide to go pro I should spend all my money on shares.
The Live Comedy at both h-Bar and Metric was excellent, I’ve seen Abandoman before but they knock my socks off every time and I’m so excited that we’ll be having live comedy at the union every month this year (Look out for the next event on November 10). And tonight I get to see Finn Jones who plays Loras Tyrell in Game of Thrones DJ-ing – I think it’s going to be pretty special.
Next week I’m looking forward to a little bit of being back down to earth… starting with Dri, our first ever alcohol free night at the Union that hopefully will be a good way to take a bit of a break and still have some fun on our inflatable games as we start getting into some real lectures. As an added bonus, due to not serving alcohol we’re able to throw our bars doors open to under 18s for the night, so whoever you are you should definitely head on down.
I hope you’ve all had a great welcome week, whether you’re a Fresher a new Post-Grad or a returning student. It’s been a great start to the year and tonight should be a brilliant way to celebrate that before we get into all of our events for the rest of the term and the year. Look out for the Battle of the Bands at Reynolds, our upcoming vote on the Summer Ball theme for this year, more live comedy at the union and all the other live one off and regular events at our venues. You’ll probably find me propping up the bar… but maybe after a few early nights next week to recover.
