One of my manifesto points, which I strongly believe in, is the need to increase study abroad options at Imperial outside of Europe.
I passionately think this because some departments have amazing links with universities in the USA, Australia and Singapore. However others don’t have the option to study abroad outside of Europe. This was further enforced when I discovered that UCL had links with Caltech.
So after starting this role I found all of the current study abroad partners by course, which is shown below (data was true in October 2012 and there could be some more unofficial partners).
It can be seen straight away that we have links with some of the best universities in Europe but the majority of departments do not have links with highly prestigious universities outside Europe. When compared with other UK institutions with respect to year abroad programmes I am saddened by how our international reputation has not translated into better study abroad partners (if you want to see this data send me an email, since there is a lot text).
When I carried out further research I found that since 2009, MIT have been running a programme branded as MISTI. This gives undergraduates a chance to carry out a summer research placement around the world, at either other universities or within industry. I like to think Imperial is the British and European equivalent of MIT, so should we be rolling out a similar scheme?
I want to hear your views on this (mainly to make sure I am not being delusional) so I will be running an International Mobility survey from 12th – 24th November, which will give you a chance to voice your opinions on what the future of international links for undergraduate courses should look like. These will mainly focus on these 3 main areas:
1. Study abroad partners
2. International UROPs (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Placements) or IROPs over the summer holidays
3. Year in Industry/6 month placements in industry
