On Thursday 7 May 2015, there will be a General Election. If you want to vote, you must be registered - and the registration deadline is midnight tonight.

How do I register?

Register by visiting gov.uk/register-to-vote

The registration process is simple and very quick. All you need is some basic personal information - full name, date of birth, and postcode.

You do not need a National Insurance Number! If you don't have one, or can't access it, select the I don't know my National Insurance number option, and then the I can't provide a National Insurance number option.

You will be asked why you don't have one - simply answer truthfully and complete the rest of the application. Your local Electoral Services office will attempt to verify your identity another way.

Who can vote?

Citizens of many countries can cast a vote. All citizens of the United Kingdom, most current and former Commonwealth nations, and citizens of the Republic of Ireland are eligible to take part. A full list of countries whose citizens can vote is given below. 

I've registered online - now what?

You can expect to receive a polling card in the mail, explaining where your local polling station is and how to vote. If you don't get one, don't worry - you don't need to have it on you to vote. 

Voting is open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 7 May.
