Our Submission to the Residential Experience Review

The College announced the Residential Experience Review at the beginning of this academic year with the aim of shaping the residential experience for Imperial students. It will also set out an action plan for the Review Panel’s recommendations.

The College residences and the support given to students moving into the private sector are important components of a student’s experience of Imperial. Having a high-quality, well-supported system that is sensitive to the needs of students supports College’s higher objectives of excellence in teaching, learning and research. This review fits in with the College’s Education & Student strategy and ‘Our Plan’ – the Union’s own set of strategic objectives. Relevant excepts include:

  • ESS 1.6: Continually enhance the ‘Welcome’ experience for all new students
  • ESS 1.7: Develop a programme to support the ‘transition’ for new students
  • Our Plan SC3: Work in partnership with College to review and improve the ‘Welcome Week’ provision through a review of the Union’s activities and advising the College on how to improve their own arrangements.

The Union was asked to submit a document of evidence to this review which is available to view here.

The document contains various suggestions for areas of investigation and recommendations for the Panel, based on previous survey data. Our main recommendation is that the review group commission full scale consultation with students for any proposed action going forward, something we were unable to do given the extremely short timescale given.
