Imperial College Union today welcomed Dr Charles Tannock MEP, a Conservative member of the European Parliament for London.
As part of our political engagement programme, our Officer Trustees and staff have been meeting elected representatives from any location with a significant population of Imperial students. Previously, MPs, Assembly Members and local councillors have been given a tour of the Union, learnt about our three-year strategic plan, and discussed how local communities and Imperial students can mutually benefit from collaboration and volunteering. Dr Tannock is the first member of the European Parliament to visit the Union, although we hope to welcome a number of his colleagues, after the local and EU elections on Thursday.
Dr Tannock, a non-practising psychiatrist who studied at Oxford and Middlesex Hospital, is interested in developing academia in London, as well as being the Conservatives' Brussels spokesman on foreign affairs.
David & Yas discussed the impact of the Immigration Bill and the immigrant cap on international students, a topic on which the Union has previously lobbied MPs and the House of Lords.
As a result of this meeting, we will do the following:
- Send Dr Tannock MEP our evidence for the House of Lords on the impact of the Immigration Bill on international students
