Real Ale Festival

The Union Bar is famous for its range of real ales, and to celebrate the start of term we are running superb Real Ale Festival.

Starting from Tuesday 9 October, we have ten ales for you to try.

STIFF UPPER LIP 3,8%

A Pale with a big character all to itself. Once in the glass it has an outwardly simple and easy going golden appearance but it comes with lots of baggage! A well balanced mellow malt gives the beer a clear and rich body whilst a myriad of well selected hops leaves the beer with a wonderfully crisp late bitter finish.

NOTTING HILL BLONDE 4,3%

Notting Hill Blonde is a continental style yellow beer which flavour explodes on the tongue, a mix of hops, bitterness and sweetness. Fruity hops on the nose and palate fade in the aftertaste, leaving a dry bitter character with a little spiciness

TOLLY ENGLISH ALE 2.8%

This fine amber ale has been brewed using a complex mix of hops to offer balanced bitterness with strong tropical notes. All the flavour you would expect from a great English ale but at only 2.8% ABV

easy going golden appearance but it comes with lots of baggage

OLDE TRIP 4.3%

Taking its name from the world famous Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem, which lays claim to being England's oldest inn, this is a rich, toffee-flavoured beer bursting with fruity character that is perfectly balanced with a clean, bitter finish.

RUDDLES COUNTY 4.3%

Originally from England's smallest county – Rutland – Ruddles County is an English ale with a distinctive flavour of dark toffee and caramel combined with a crisp bitterness derived from using rare Bramling Cross hops.

LONDON GLORY 4%

A celebratory ale created by the master brewers of Greene King for the nation's capital city. Centuries of expertise and craftsmanship have come together to produce this rich and fruity brew that combines crystal malt with challenger and goldings hops.

GREENE KING IPA GOLD, 4.1%

This light golden ale brings the best out of the Savinsjki Goldings hop variety. The timing for introducing these hops is all-important because this creates the balance between the hoppy aroma and the bitterness of the aftertaste. For Greene King IPA Gold, brewers add the hops at a later stage of the boil than with the Greene King IPA – this brings out tropical fruit aromas and spicy notes, which are followed by the clean, bitter flavour and crisp, dry finish.

OLD SPECKLED HEN 4.5%

Old Speckled Hen’ has a full, smooth flavour and is very easy to drink. Its rich amber colour and superb fruity aromas are complemented by a delicious blend of malty tastes. Toffee and malt combine with bitterness on the back of the tongue to give a balanced sweetness. This, all followed by a refreshingly dry finish

1799 4.5%

A deliciously dark, traditional porter recipe using crystal and chocolate malt.

FIRESIDE 4.5%

A fantastic winter warmer, this mature dark and malty Ale is late hopped for a mellow fruity linger. Available in Cask only throughout November.

Did you know we have one of the largest collection of pewter tankard in the UK? Each officer of a Club, Society or Project is entitled to a tankard, with some tankards showing the names of past officers into the 1950s!
