For the last 18 months Jennie, Deputy President (Welfare), has been campaigning with support from ICSMSU and the Faculty of Medicine to improve the funding situation for year 5 and 6 medical students. Funding for medical students generally decreases significantly for the final two years of the course and a study conducted by Jennie last academic year found that the level of funding received by students currently is insufficient to cover even basic living costs.
We are now able to announce that the College have agreed to give incoming medical students the option to spread their Imperial Bursary across the whole 6 years of their course, rather than just the first 4. This ultimately means up to £400 per month extra in medical students’ pockets in years 5 and 6. The scheme will also potentially be opened up to current first year students.
Further details to follow.
