FiveSixEight to be renamed 'Pint'

Today, the Union Executive Committee voted unanimously to give FiveSixEight a second name: 'Pint'. The decision was taken after discussions on how best to increase sales over the Summer period and after employing the help of an external advertising agency, Satchi & Satchi.

Measurements as precise as millilitres caused problems for engineers

Deputy Presidents Henry Whittaker (Civil Engineering) and Stefan Nubert (Geophysics) raised concerns that measurements as precise as millilitres caused problems for engineers who are normally used to dealing with values of only one significant figure. With a student body as diverse as Imperial's, it was felt important that scientists are still represented in the bars; many of whom, it was thought by Deputy Presidents Doug Hunt (Chemistry) and Becky Lane (Physics) would be keen to retain an accurate a measurement as millilitres. As such, they were keen not to diminish sales by discouraging scientists from using the Union bars through insufficient accuracy in the bars' name.

When redevelopment of the bars and nightclub (then called Da Vinci's and dB's) occurred in 2010 the name 'The Library' was considered. This was also considered by the Executive Committee today - with the thought from Satchi & Satchi that the Union could potentially capitalise on confusion between students over the revision period, many of whom are now flocking to the (real) Library.

The final decision was to not exploit students, but to appease as many as possible however. The dual naming will mean that the entrance to the bar from the east staircase will have the name 'Pint' over the door, with the main lobby entrance retaining the name 'FiveSixEight'. The new signage will be in place prior to the start of term, and engineers are encouraged to enter via the east entrance from now on. Scientists and Medics are encouraged to use the main lobby entrance.

FiveSixEight is one of the three Union bars.
